Nice peaceful hiking area away from touristy places. Lots of variety of fauna. Has a lot of grade variation through the loop, most of it gradual. Paths are well marked except for the lower spring area. We weren't sure if we were supposed to go further and we couldn't see the springs. Has free parking on the road. Overall a great spot to hike.
It’s probably a really nice trail but unfortunately closed at the moment due to recent fire and wind events.
We enjoyed our day here at the Waihou Spring Trail. The drive up to the trail was beautiful. You’re kind of left wondering where it is but if you keep driving you will know when you’ve arrived to the beginning of the trail. The main part of the trail is pretty level and easy. We had been told there was a waterfall here. We walked the loop with no signage about a waterfall. We finally came to a ledge with a warning sign about the earth on the edge could come loose. We decided to start down. We assumed that was the trail to the waterfall. There’s a thin trail to follow, it’s a bit steep in a few places. Arriving at the bottom, there was no waterfall. There were caves and lava tubes there. I climbed up to one of the caves. I climbed inside and could see that the caves went into the mountain. I’m too big of a chicken and decided a few feet in was enough. I was with my aunt and sister. Our ages were 50-65. We did well on the hike if you’re wondering if you can do it. We thoroughly enjoyed our hike. We saw a few ladies right when we set out. We saw one gentleman come down to the bottom and head back up in front of us. That is all we saw. It definitely wasn’t crowded. Give it a try!!
One of my favorite trails on Maui. The loop trail is an easy hike with only about 200 ft of elevation gain. The Spring trail is a moderate hike with about 500 ft of elevation change and a much narrower trail. The trail is at an elevation of 3,800 ft. so it is cool, even in the summer.
This is a very easy loop trail. It is absolutely beautiful and a really relaxing place. To get to the actual springs is a bit of a challenge. The path is narrow so you should have proper footware when trekking down. I was a bit disappointed because the springs were not actually flowing but it was summer and Maui was going through an intense drought. It was still a nice hike a good challenge level for me.
Awesome trail - make sure to take the overlook trail down to the lava tubes; truly a unique experience! Keep in mind you'll be at 3000 feet altitude so it will be noticeably cooler than at the beach - you may wish to bring a light jacket if it's early in the morning.
Very nice early morning walk. Drive up can be windy and very narrow in spots. Plan accordingly and if you're not a confident driver find someone else to drive. I would recommend going early in the day. The temperature is also quite cooler up there.
Waihou spring is a fantastic place for individuals, couples, friends, and families. There is easy parking which leads directly into an easy loop path which is wide and generally free from mud. All Trails lists the loop as 1.8 miles. There is a more challenging off-shoot to the loop which includes switchbacks that require one to be careful after rain, yet with the ground cover mud is kept to a minimum. Good for ages 8-70 if fitness of a moderate level.
